“Mathematics in recent music theory: applications and (mis)uses”
Abstract:
While connections between mathematics and music have been asserted for millennia, recent decades have seen a growing interest in applications of mathematics to music theory and composition. This talk will review recent musical research touching upon group theoretic properties of musical intervals, tiling cyclotomic canons, orbifold models of chord geometry, and principal component analysis of timbre. Musical examples will range from Chopin to Deep Purple, concluding with the speaker’s own compositional research.
